Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a conference in Hanoi on December 29, with a focus on ensuring security and public order to support socio-economic development in the Mekong Delta region.

He urged the implementation of several core task groups, stressing the close integration of socio-economic development with defence and security from the grassroots level, under the unified leadership of local Party committee and administration leaders and coordinated inter-agency action. – Vietnam – Indonesia relations are entering a new phase after 70 years of development on a foundation of close historical ties (December 30, 1955 – 2025), with plenty of room for further development, according to Vietnamese Ambassador to Indonesia Ta Van Thong.

In an interview granted to a Vietnam News Agency (VNA)’s correspondent in Jakarta, the diplomat noted that the traditional friendship, nurtured early on by President Ho Chi Minh and President Sukarno and carefully cultivated by successive generations of leaders and people of both countries, has made remarkable progress across politics, economy, defence and people-to-people exchanges. – A special five-episode documentary series titled “Cuba and Vietnam: brothers by choice” has been launched to mark the 65th founding anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries (December 2, 1960 –2025).

The series is jointly produced by Vietnam Television (VTV)'s TV Centre in Ho Chi Minh City (VTV9) and Cubavisión Internacional (CVI) with the participation of journalists, filmmakers, experts and historical witnesses from both countries. It recalls key milestones in the bilateral ties while portraying everyday stories that reflect the depth and steadfast nature of the special friendship between the two nations. Read full story

– Nearly 30,000 gift packages will be delivered to poor households, workers, and people in especially difficult circumstances nationwide on the occasion of the 2026 Lunar New Year (Tet), according to a newly issued plan of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF).

On behalf of the Standing Committee of the VFF Central Committee, Ha Thi Nga, a member of the Party Central Committee and Vice Chairwoman of the VFF Central Committee, signed Plan No. 96/KH-MTTW-BTT on coordinating visits and gift-giving activities to the poor, workers, and disadvantaged groups during the coming Tet. – A shipment of humanitarian aid from the Polish Government was handed over to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment at Noi Bai International Airport on December 28 to support disaster recovery efforts in Dak Lak province.

The seven-tonne aid consignment includes blankets, tents, buckets, basins, tubular elastic bandages and other essential items, helping meet basic daily needs of people affected by natural disasters in Dak Lak. Read full story

– The year 2025 has emerged as a milestone for Vietnam’s tourism sector, marked by robust growth, strong international recognition, and renewed momentum toward becoming a spearhead industry of the national economy.

According to the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), Vietnam is projected to welcome 21.5 million international visitors and serve 135.5 million domestic travellers in 2025, with total tourism revenue exceeding 1 quadrillion VND (38.03 billion USD). On December 15, a ceremony was held at Phu Quoc International Airport to welcome the country’s 20 millionth international visitor. This marks two-fold growth in the country's tourism in less than a decade, having reached 10 million foreign arrivals in 2016. Read full story

– The International Xiangqi Masters Tournament – 7th Phuong Trang Cup concluded on December 28 at FUTA Residence – Da Nang Times Square.

The final match between Nguyen Thanh Bao of Vietnam and Xu Wenqiang of China drew strong attention. Their standard game ended in a draw, forcing a rapid playoff.
