- Party General Secretary To Lam, head of the Central Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Corruption, Wastefulness, and Negative Phenomena, on December 25 chaired the committee’s 29th meeting to review its 2025 performance and discuss its work programme for 2026.

The committee agreed that in the past year, efforts against corruption, wastefulness, and negative practices continued to be implemented in a strong, resolute, and comprehensive manner, with many new approaches producing clear results, fostering broad consensus and unity among officials, Party members, and the public. - The Border Guard Command of Vietnam’s Lai Chau province, and the Honghe Border Management Detachment and the Jinshuihe Immigration Inspection Station of China conducted a joint border patrol on December 25.

Under the rotational mechanism, this joint patrol was chaired by the Chinese side. Both sides established a joint patrol command, each forming three land patrol teams and two liaison teams to conduct joint patrols along the border section from Marker No. 29 to Marker No. 71. Read full story

- The World and Vietnam Report under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on December 25 launched a special publication featuring 65 years of brotherhood between Vietnam and Cuba to mark the 65th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties (1960–2025) and the Vietnam–Cuba Friendship Year 2025.

The event was attended by Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dang Hoang Giang; Cuban Ambassador to Vietnam Rogelio Polanco Fuentes and his spouse; Palestinian Ambassador and Head of the Diplomatic Corps in Vietnam Saadi Salama, along with representatives of central agencies, ministries, and sectors, as well as former ambassadors and experts who studied and worked in Vietnam and Cuba. - Vietnam Customs on December 25 held a ceremony to mark the country’s total import-export turnover surpassing 900 billion USD for the first time - the highest level ever recorded and a significant achievement in its international economic integration.

According to the agency’s estimates, total trade in 2025 reached about 920 billion USD, up 16.9% year on year. Of the total, exports were valued at 470.59 billion USD, a year-on-year increase of 15.9%, while imports amounted to 449.41 billion USD, up 18%, resulting in a trade surplus of around 21.2 billion USD. This marked the 10th consecutive year Vietnam has recorded a trade surplus. Read full story

- Vingroup has officially submitted a document to the Government requesting to withdraw its registration to invest in the North–South high-speed railway project, citing the need to concentrate resources on other key infrastructure and energy projects.

In the document dated December 25, Vingroup asked to retract the investment registration it had submitted to the Government in May 2025. The group said the decision was made after careful consideration to ensure maximum focus of capital, manpower and implementation capacity on strategic infrastructure projects recently assigned to it. - Vietnam Airlines (VNA) has launched its first direct flights connecting Ho Chi Minh City to northern Dien Bien province, strengthening air connectivity between the country’s largest economic hub and the Northwestern region.

The national carrier’s inaugural flight VN1160 departed from Tan Son Nhat International Airport at 9.35 on December 24 and arrived at Dien Bien Airport at 11.55, carrying nearly 100 passengers. The route is operated by Airbus A321 aircrafts with two flights per week and a flight time of about two hours and 20 minutes. Passengers can also connect from Dien Bien to the capital city of Hanoi via daily flights./. Read full story

16th NA reviews amendments to four tax-related laws on April 21

Lawmakers are expected to discuss the supplementary assessment of the implementation of the 2025 socio-economic development plan and state budget, as well as performance in the early months of 2026. They will also review the five-year socio-economic development plan for 2026–2030, thrift practices and anti-wastefulness efforts in 2025, and progress in achieving national gender equality targets. The session is broadcast live on radio and television, enabling voters and the public to follow proceedings.

Draft law proposes flexible tax thresholds, extended incentives for EVs

Presenting the Government’s proposal, Minister of Finance Ngo Van Tuan said the draft law proposes not to stipulate specific revenue thresholds for exemption from personal income tax or value-added tax for household and individual businesses in the law, instead assigning the Government to set these thresholds.

Lawmakers suggest groundbreaking mechanisms to revive Vietnamese culture

The draft resolution seeks to lure more investment into cultural industries, aiming for the sector to contribute 7% to GDP by 2030 and 9% by 2045. It also sets ambitious goals of ranking Vietnam among the top three countries in Southeast Asia and the global top 30 for national soft power.

Pathways to double-digit growth to be tabled at 16th NA’s first session

In the morning sitting on April 20, deputies are expected to hear proposals and verification reports on a range of draft resolutions. The documents cover breakthrough mechanisms and policies for the development of Vietnamese culture; the establishment of Dong Nai as a centrally run city; a pilot framework for public lawyer institution; and special mechanisms to address land law violations committed prior to the 2024 Land Law taking effect, alongside measures to resolve long-delayed and stalled projects.
