Anti-corruption dialogue focuses on mining

The 9th regular Anti-corruption Dialogue with foreign donors was held inHanoi on May 25, focusing on mining and management of minerals.

Thedialogue was held prior to the mid-year Meeting of Consultative Groupfor Vietnam , to be held in the central province of Ha Tinh fromJune 8-10.

Representatives from ministries, sectors,organisations, localities, foreign embassies, internationalorganisations and non-governmental organisations discussed the risks andrealities of corruption and recommended measures to fight corruption inthe management of natural resources and the mining sector.

Participantspraised works on combating corruption, particularly in land managementand use achieved since the 8 th dialogue. They agreed that corruptionin land management was a problem, leaving negative effects on people’slives and the nation’s socio-economic development.

They suggestedthat the role of supervision by the community and local people shouldbe encouraged, to fight corruption in land management and mining and amaster plan for the mining sector must also ensure hygiene and safetyfor workers.

Addressing the dialogue, Deputy Minister of Industryand Trade Nguyen Duc Tho said it was necessary to acceleratedissemination on the fight against corruption and examine legaldocuments and policies relating to mining and mineral processingindustries for adjustments to avoid corruption-weak spots, and ensuremanagement effectiveness.

He said that managers should completepolicies and boost cooperation with relevant agencies to inspectactivities of mining and mineral processing and promptly deal withviolations.

Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Staffan Herstrom saidVietnam had a large reserve and potential in unexploited minerals, sofighting corruption in this field was very important, in order to bringa country rich in natural resources towards high growth and povertyreduction.

Government Inspector General Tran Van Truyen praisedparticipants’ opinions, describing them as important contributions tocomplete State management policies and boost responsibilities of sectorsand agencies at all levels in preventing corruption in important fieldsof the development process in Vietnam .

Truyen took theoccasion to announce that the Vietnamese Government had approved the UKEmbassy as a sponsor and coordinator of cooperative activities anddialogues on anti-corruption with Vietnam after the 9 th dialogue./.
