Vientiane (VNA) – The seventh ASEAN conference on electronic and personal data protection took place in Vientiane, Laos, on October 22, drawing 46 officials from 10 ASEAN member countries.

The event is part of the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials' Meeting (ADGSOM), running from October 21 to 25.

The conference focused on the implementation of data protection principles and the facilitation of knowledge exchange among ASEAN nations to enhance electronic and personal data protection.

Representatives discussed the progress of data protection initiatives in each country and the settlement of challenges in the field. Singapore presented its implementation plan for the ASEAN cooperation frameworks on government data and cross-border personal data transfers. Meanwhile, Cambodia shared its upcoming initiatives.

A workshop on new technologies in data protection, with the participation of Japan’s electronic data protection authority and ASEAN businesses, also took place. The discussion covered concerns over personal data protection standards of businesses, data sharing in the public sector, and the use of data to drive technological innovation.

Delegates expressed optimism about the future of data protection in ASEAN and the collective desire to develop mechanisms for protecting personal data and promoting the privacy culture that matches both citizen and business needs./.
