Cambodian leaders spotlight friendship with Vietnam

Dung was warmlywelcomed by King Norodom Sihamoni on his official visit to Cambodia,who emphasised that “ Cambodia has been lucky to have such a goodfriend like Vietnam”.

The King expressedaspiration to gear bilateral relations to a new dimension in theinterest of the two countries’ prosperity.

Heconcluded by asking the Vietnamese Government leader to convey bestregards from his father Norodom Sihanouk to Secretary General of theCommunist Party of Vietnam Nong Duc Manh, State President Nguyen MinhTriet and other leaders of Vietnam.

In his meetingwith Senate President Chea Sim, Dung highlighted traditional relationsbetween the two countries. He emphasised that in the current context,efforts to strengthen solidarity, traditional friendship andcomprehensive cooperation between the two countries play an importantrole in the development cause of each and every nation as well ascontribute to peace, stability, cooperation and development inSoutheast Asia and the world as a whole.

His viewwas shared by the Cambodian Senate leader, who congratulated Vietnamfor their achievements, saying he considered them as Cambodia’s own.

Chea Sim also valued cooperation between the twocountries’ border provinces, saying the two Governments should speed upthe border demarcation and border marker planting to meet the deadlinein 2012.

“The Cambodian people engrave in theirhearts the sacrifice of lives and blood by Vietnamese volunteers intheir noble international mission during Cambodia’s struggle againstthe genocidal regime as well as in their national reconstruction anddevelopment,” Chea Sim concluded.

In the othermeeting with National Assembly President Heng Samrin of Cambodia,Dung expressed satisfaction at the recent fine development oflegislative bodies’ relations as shown in their mutual support inregional and international forums.

The Vietnameseleader thanked the Cambodian National Assembly and its Presidentpersonally for strongly backing Vietnam in its capacity as Presidentof the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA)-2010.

For his part, Heng Samrin praised Vietnam for successfullycalling the AIPA-2010 meeting and the 17th ASEAN Summit. He emphasisedthat Vietnam’s image has been constantly improving in the regionaland international arenas.

In the afternoon of theday, Prime Minister Dung paid floral tributes to Cambodian fallensoldiers at the Monument of Independence and Vietnamese martyrs atthe Monument of Vietnamese Volunteers . He visited the Phnom Penhoffice of the Bank for Investment and Development of Cambodia, ajoint-venture with Vietnam, and the Vietnamese Embassy.

Prime Minister Hun Sen of Cambodia and his wife held a party inhonour of Vietnamese Prime Minister Dung, his wife and his entourage./.

To further strengthen Vietnam-Belgium relations, especially parliamentary cooperation, both sides agreed to enhance delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
