Havana (VNA) - Cuba’s University of Havana, together with the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), inaugurated a department under its Faculty of Philosophy, History, and Sociology to study Vietnam and its renowned leader, President Ho Chi Minh, on May 19.

In her remarks at the launch ceremony on the occasion of the great Vietnamese figure's 135th birth anniversary (1890-2025), Dr Miriam Nicado García, Rector of the university, highlighted the department’s establishment as a testament to the historic relationship between the two peoples. She remarked that it will help strengthen ties between Vietnamese and Cuban higher education institutions and further nurture cooperation.

Dr Maria Teresa Montes, who heads the newly launched department, stated that one of its core missions is to promote research into the political thought and enduring historical legacy of President Ho Chi Minh. The department will facilitate multidisciplinary studies on Vietnam’s historical, economic, and cultural development.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Le Quang Long expressed his belief that the university would become a reputable centre for education and research on Vietnam, helping to disseminate Ho Chi Minh's thought and methodological philosophy further afield than Cuba, across Latin America and the world.

The diplomat said the establishment of the department will help deepen the Vietnam-Cuba special friendship, solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation, while enhancing mutual understanding between their peoples, particularly among younger generations.

To mark the occasion, Long presented the facility with several books on the life and career of President Ho Chi Minh.

Speaking to the Vietnam News Agency, Dr Ruvislei González Saez, Vice President of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association, remarked that this department will serve as a new bridge in the special bilateral relationship./.
