Paris (VNA) – The Permanent Mission of France to the UN has welcomed Vietnam’s hosting of the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime (Hanoi Convention) on October 25.
In its statement issued on October 28, the mission noted that the convention offers France, the European Union (EU), and other signatory states a shared framework for tackling borderless cybercrimes that demand coordinated action. It also complements the Council of Europe’s Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, reinforcing international cooperation mechanisms in the fight against cyber threats.
The French mission stated that the Hanoi Convention enables national authorities to cooperate more closely in information exchange and joint investigations, while facilitating the arrest, extradition, and prosecution of cybercriminals anywhere in the world. By promoting international cooperation, the agreement provides practical tools to address increasingly sophisticated digital threats.
The statement reaffirmed that throughout the negotiation process, France and its EU partners had underscored the need for any new international cooperation mechanism to uphold strong human rights and data protection standards, adding that the safeguards enshrined in the convention align with France’s international obligations.
The prompt implementation of the Hanoi Convention, with the participation of civil society and the private sector, is considered a key factor in effectively dealing with challenges posed by cybercrime, the mission stressed./.
