Hanoi (VNA) - With free 5G access now available in multiple cities and provinces, Vietnam's three major telecom operators - Viettel, VinaPhone, and MobiFone - are preparing for the commercial launch of 5G technology nationwide.

This initiative not only enhances user experience but also supports the nation’s goals in digital transformation and the expansion of the digital economy.

As of October 2024, Viettel, a leading Vietnamese telecommunications provider, has achieved 4G coverage of 95% of Vietnam’s population, which is crucial for the upcoming transition from 2G to 4G and 5G. As part of its support for Vietnam's digital transformation goals, Viettel aims to cover all of the 63 provinces and cities with 5G by the end of October 2024.

In addition, Viettel has invested heavily in international infrastructure, including the Asia Direct Cable (ADC) Project, which is set to launch in early 2025, expanding Vietnam’s international bandwidth capacity by 50%. Domestically, the company has developed 24 data centres with a combined capacity of 560 MW, well above the current national capacity of 150 MW and established four additional submarine cables to meet 60% of Vietnam’s international connectivity needs by 2030.

Major General Tao Duc Thang, Viettel Chairman and CEO, shared that the group aims to build the most secure, advanced digital infrastructure in Vietnam, providing a foundation for national digital services and economic transformation.

VinaPhone is on track to install over 3,000 5G base stations nationwide by the end of 2024, particularly in urban areas and economic hubs, aiming to provide continuous, high-speed coverage. Promising speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G, VinaPhone’s 5G network also features low latency, which is ideal for high-bandwidth activities like mobile gaming and other interactive applications.

Applications include automation, remote management, telemedicine, and online education, helping businesses optimise operations and contribute to the growth of the digital economy.

MobiFone, which acquired the C3 spectrum (3800-3900 MHz) in July, is working to complete the infrastructure required for its 5G launch, expected in November. With a focus on customer-centric services, MobiFone is preparing for nationwide commercialisation by investing in high-quality 5G equipment, expanding network coverage, and creating competitive 5G offerings.

To enhance its rollout efficiency, MobiFone has adopted a shared infrastructure model, collaborating with other 5G operators to optimise resources and improve user experience. The company has also entered strategic agreements with international firms, including Ericsson and F-Secure, to ensure network security and maximize customer satisfaction.

MobiFone’s 5G offerings are designed to cater not only to individual consumers but also to business clients. Services will cover a range of technological solutions such as smart factories, smart ports, and online education.

Additionally, MobiFone’s 5G will support high-demand applications like online gaming, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and high-quality video streaming in 4K and 8K, enhancing entertainment options for users.

The nationwide rollout of 5G signifies a major step in Vietnam's telecommunications infrastructure, which plays a central role in the nation’s digital and economic transformation.

With significant investment from Viettel, VinaPhone, and MobiFone, Vietnam’s 5G network promises to offer high-speed, low-latency connectivity, supporting a range of innovative applications that will elevate both quality of life and economic productivity./.
