First microelectronics research centre to be formed in Binh Duong

Under the agreement, the centre will be developed based on the Fraunhofer model, Europe’s renowned innovation platform, focusing on applied research and innovation to serve industry and society. The partnership will centre on two key pillars of project management (financial planning and public-private partnerships) and and scientific research (feasibility study and development strategies of semiconductor and microelectronics sectors in Vietnam).

Binh Duong (VNA) – The Investment and Industrial Development JSC (Becamex IDC Corp) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS) of Germany to establish a microelectronics research centre in the southern province of Binh Duong.

This marks a strategic step toward positioning Binh Duong as a high-tech hub and integrating it deeper into the global semiconductor value chain, thus opening great opportunities for Vietnam’s high-value technology industry.

The event demonstrates the local authorities’ strong commitment to integration and innovation, while also paving the way for comprehensive cooperation with leading technology research centres in the world. The centre is expected to serve as a catalyst for fostering an innovation-driven ecosystem, thus contributing to economic restructuring and improving the quality of growth in the new development phase.

Pham Ngoc Thuan, General Director of Becamex IDC, stated that the signing marks the realisation of a cooperation commitment made by the two sides in August 2024 in Germany. The microelectronics research centre will not only serve as a hub for technology connectivity but also as a foundation for training high-quality human resources to directly support electronics and semiconductor industries and related areas in Vietnam.

Prof. Dr. Harald Kuhn, Director of Fraunhofer ENAS, highly evaluated Binh Duong’s potential and development vision, stating that the firm sees here a favourable environment for research and technology transfer.

Fraunhofer ENAS is committed to long-term cooperation and contributing international expertise to help Binh Duong become a vital link in the global semiconductor industry ecosystem, he added.

In August 2024, in Saxony state of Germany, Becamex IDC and Fraunhofer ENAS signed a framework cooperation agreement to develop the microelectronics sector and smart systems. The establishment of the microelectronics research centre in Binh Duong is seen as a pioneering step toward building homegrown science and technology capacity, contributing to increasing national competitiveness and expanding industrial development in a green, smart, and sustainable orientation./.
