Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Hungarian President Sulyok Tamas and his spouse Nagy Zsuzsanna left Hanoi on May 29 evening, wrapping up a three-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of State President Luong Cuong.

President Tamas expressed his joy to visit Vietnam for the first time, and showed his admiration for the country's remarkable achievements through its Doi Moi (Renewal) and international integration efforts. He reaffirmed Hungary's commitment to Vietnam as its most important partner in Southeast Asia and highlighted his country's desire to strengthen cooperation across all sectors. Read full story

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on May 29 chaired a government meeting on decentralisation, delegation of authority, and the organisation of the two-tier local administration model.

The PM underscored the guiding principle of “localities deciding, acting, and taking responsibility.” He said that decentralisation must go hand-in-hand with resource allocation, implementation capacity building, and enhanced accountability, while reinforcing oversight, inspection, and anti-corruption efforts. PM Chinh, who is also head of the Government’s Steering Committee on the development of sci-tech, innovation, digital transformation and Project 06, made the call while attending the fourth digital transformation event in the banking sector 2025 themed “Smart digital ecosystem in the new era” in Hanoi on May 29. – National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man had a meeting with former and incumbent deputies from the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang on May 29 as part of the delegation’s visit ahead of the 80th anniversary of Vietnam’s first General Election (January 6, 1946).

Expressing his delight over the province’s development over more than two decades since its establishment, the top legislator praised the local Party, administration and people for promoting solidarity to overcome challenges, propel socio-economy, and ensure defence-security. – Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung had separate meetings with Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Muto Yoji and former Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Tokyo on May 29, as part of his working visit to the East Asian nation and attendance at the 30th Future of Asia forum.

During his meeting with Minister Muto, Deputy PM Dung expressed Vietnam’s wish for the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to closely coordinate with relevant Vietnamese ministries and agencies to advance the implementation of commitments shared between the countries’ leaders. He particularly mentioned the outcomes of Japanese PM Ishiba Shigeru's recent visit to Vietnam regarding such key cooperation areas as energy, green transition, industry, and science-technology. – The Vietnamese Government remains steadfast in its policy to promote legal, safe, and orderly migration while resolutely combating illegal migration and human trafficking, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang reaffirmed at the ministry’s regular press briefing on May 29.

Responding to reporters’ questions concerning recent British media reports that Vietnamese nationals are still being smuggled into the UK in container trucks, Hang said that officials have been aware of the information and are currently verifying details. Read full story

– Vietnamese Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang has expressed hope that the US would ensure a smooth visa application and interview process for Vietnamese students, allowing education to remain a key pillar of the Vietnam – US comprehensive strategic partnership.

During a regular press briefing in Hanoi on May 29, Hang addressed concerns about the US Government's temporary suspension of new visas for foreign students, restrictions on Harvard University, which has been barred from admitting international students, and the requirement for current international students to either transfer schools or risk losing their legal status. – The Embassies of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) held a press conference in Hanoi on May 29 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Vietnam and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

At the event, Russian Ambassador Gennady Bezdetko recalled that negotiations for a new cooperation framework were officially approved by the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in December 2012. Between March 2013 and December 2014, eight rounds of negotiations were held, alongside expert-level meetings among specialised working groups. NA Standing Committee's key work agenda for 2026 approved

A major focus will be preparations for the election of deputies to the 16th NA and to People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026–2031 term. The NASC will coordinate with the National Election Council, the Government, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, and relevant agencies and organisations to continue implementing the election plan, organise oversight of the electoral process, and carry out its duties and powers as prescribed.
