Philippines, Germany boost defence cooperation

The Philippines and Germany have committed to signing a defence cooperation arrangement this year, vowing to uphold international rules-based order in the Asia-Pacific region.

Hanoi (VNA) - The Philippines and Germany have committed to signing a defence cooperation arrangement this year, vowing to uphold international rules-based order in the Asia-Pacific region.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his Philippine counterpart Gilberto Teodoro committed to establishing long-term relations between their armed forces to expand training and bilateral exchanges, explore opportunities to expand bilateral armaments cooperation and engage in joint projects at a meeting in Manila on August 4.

The meeting took place as part of the first visit by a German defence minister to the Philippines, as the two countries celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations.

Speaking at a press conference with his German counterpart, Teodoro said the Philippines is looking to modernise its military to boost defence and will look to cooperate with Germany in this area./.
