Hanoi (VNA) – During the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday from February 14–22, Phu Quoc International Airport handled 767 flights and more than 260,473 passengers, marking its strongest Tet growth since becoming operational in 2012.
The airport recorded 767 flights (1,534 take-offs and landings), including 371 domestic and 396 international services, up 46% year-on-year.
Passenger throughput reached 260,473, comprising 116,830 domestic and 143,643 international travellers, a 37% increase compared with the same period in 2025.
This was also the first large-scale capacity test since the airport’s operation was transferred to Sun Group.
Director of the airport Nguyen Ba Quan said flexible operating plans were prepared for different traffic scenarios, with a focus on efficient passenger flow, reinforced staffing at key positions and real-time adjustments by time slot.
Despite the sharp rise in flight frequency, the airport worked with aviation authorities, border police, customs, health quarantine units, air traffic control and airlines to ensure smooth and safe operations. Information-sharing mechanisms were maintained to handle arising situations while preventing congestion at security screening areas.
Technology-driven solutions were also stepped up, including full-terminal Wi-Fi coverage, enhanced 4G/5G signals and upgraded flight information display systems. Check-in counters were opened to maximum capacity based on demand, with staff deployed at security checkpoints and baggage claim areas.
Since early this year, the introduction of automatic non-stop toll collection at entry and exit points has helped ease vehicle congestion during peak hours.
With traffic surging continuously over nine days, the airport has shifted towards a proactive operational model to enhance high-load capacity, supporting Phu Quoc’s goal of becoming an international maritime urban centre and preparing for major events such as APEC 2027./.
