The 60,000 USD project,funded by the US McKnight organisation and the International Union forConservation of Nature (IUCN), aims to conduct communication campaignsto raise awareness of authorities and the communities in 13 provincesand cities in the Mekong Delta region on the impacts of hydroelectricdams built on Mekong river.
At the seminar,participants discussed advantages that the Mekong river brings toregional countries and the international community, especially toVietnam , while calling on local authorities and people implementmeasures to cope with climate change.
Anotherscientist seminar on impacts of hydroelectric dams to Mekong Deltaregion is expected to be held in September in order to seek solutions incase there are problems with hydroelectric dams upstream the Mekong .
The project, with the first phase to be carried outin three provinces of An Giang, Soc Trang and Can Tho, will run till2012./.
