The Republic of Korea (RoK) President’s office announced on August 14 that Seoul plans to offer massive aid to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) if Pyongyang abandons its nuclear ambitions.

Under the announcement, RoK President Lee Myung-bak will put forth the proposal in a speech to commemorate the 64th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule, which lasted from 1910 to 1945.

Lee will reiterate the RoK’s readiness to actively offer assistance to the DPRK in such fields as economics, education, finance, infrastructure, politics, military and security in order to establish a peaceful environment on the Korean Peninsula .

In addition, he will also call for national reunification and affirm the need for both sides to have regular, face-to-face access to each other, to create a momentum for solidarity, in order to overcome obstacles.

The announcement was made after the DPRK’s August 13 release of a RoK worker who had been detained in a joint industrial park in the DPRK’s border town of Kaesong since March./.
