Hanoi (VNA) - U22 Vietnam opened their SEA Games 33 journey with a 2-1 victory over Laos on December 3 at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, giving them an early advantage in the group stage with three points.

Coach Kim Sang Sik fielded his strongest lineup, including forwards Dinh Bac, Quoc Viet, and Thanh Nhan.

Right after the opening whistle, U22 Vietnam completely took control of the match. Their fluent attacks down both flanks clearly reflected coach Kim Sang-sik’s intention to implement high pressing. In the 16th minute, Thanh Nhan produced a skillful header from Van Khang’s cross, but the ball brushed wide by inches.

The constant pressure eventually paid off. A costly turnover high up the pitch by U22 Laos was immediately punished. Minh Phuc surged forward and laid the ball back precisely for Dinh Bac, who fired home in the 29th minute — a goal that showcased speed, vision, and excellent connection among the players.

Laos equalised in the 33rd minute following a scramble in front of goalkeeper Trung Kien. Despite continued pressure from Vietnam, the first half ended 1-1, with midfielder Xuan Bac leaving the field due to injury.

In the second half, U22 Vietnam continued to press forward, generating a series of chances. In the 49th minute, Ly Duc dribbled past two Lao defenders but failed to deliver the decisive pass. From the 50th to the 59th minute, Quoc Viet had two golden opportunities - one close-range effort was blocked, and a diving header went narrowly wide. In the 54th minute, Minh Phuc attempted another long-range strike, but the ball sailed well over the bar.

Controversy arose in the 59th minute when Dinh Bac’s strike was initially disapproved for offside, prompting protests from both coaches. After a review, the goal was awarded in the 63rd minute, putting Vietnam ahead 2-1.

Vietnam made substitutions in the 71st minute, introducing Phi Hoang and Van Thuan. Dinh Bac remained the standout, narrowly missing additional goals with a free-kick and a shot that hit the post. Laos attempted to fight back but failed to score, leaving Vietnam with a hard-earned 2-1 victory, earning three points, thanks to Dinh Bac’s brilliant brace./.
