Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Election Commission (EC) on March 4 announced the results of the referendum on amending the Constitution and the list of 499 out of 500 elected members of the House of Representatives.
The referendum on amending Thailand’s 2017 Constitution was held on February 8, the same day as the general election. Official results released by the EC and signed by EC Chairman Narong Klanwarin show that a majority of Thai voters (58.64%) supported the amendment of the current Constitution. Meanwhile, 30.46% voted against, 8.34% cast blank ballots, and 2.56% of the votes were invalid.
The outcome is considered an important first step toward replacing Thailand’s 2017 Constitution, which was drafted under the administration of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha following the 2014 military coup. However, the constitutional amendment process is expected to face significant obstacles, particularly legal limitations stemming from court rulings.
On the same day, the EC also officially announced the election of 100 party-list MPs and three constituency MPs. To date, the commission has certified 499 of the total 500 members of the House of Representatives elected in the February 8 general election.
The new House of Representatives is expected to convene its first session on March 12 to elect the Speaker and Deputy Speakers./.
