Thailand, Laos ink MoC on railway development

Thailand, Laos and China have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the development of a rail line connecting Thailand’s Nong Khai province with Laos’s Vientiane capital city.

Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand, Laos andChina have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the development of arail line connecting Thailand’s Nong Khai province with Laos’s Vientiane capitalcity.

The MoC was inked on April 25 by Thai TransportMinister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith, Lao Minister of Public Works and TransportBounchanh Sinthavong and Chinese Deputy Director of the National Developmentand Reform Commission (NDRC) Hu Zucai. 

The signing ceremony took place in Beijing,China within the framework of the second Belt and Road Forum for InternationalCooperation, which is held from April 25-27.

The rail tracksbetween the two sites will be 1.44-metre wide standard gauge. Meanwhile,another one-metre gauge standard rail track will be laid on the Thai side andconnected with dual track rail routes at Na Tha station in a district of NongKhai. The route will form part of a rail network connecting the regionwith China in the near future.

Arkhom saidThailand and Laos will each be responsible for half of the construction cost ofthe bridge, which is likely to be completed by the time the Sino-Thaihigh-speed railway project's second phase from Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khaifinishes in 2023. 

The high-speedrail scheme between Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai, which stretches 355kilometres, will be dealt with by Thailand in terms of construction design andChina will offer technical assistance during construction. -VNA
