Tourism will be the main driver of the economy of Thailand this year, a local official has stressed.

Kobsak Pootrakool, deputy secretary-general to Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for political affairs, said the sector is expected to reach its target of boosting arrivals to 20 million in the second half of 2019.

In the first eight months of this year, Thailand welcomed 26.5 million foreign visitors, raking in 1.29 trillion baht (42.4 million USD) in revenue, a year-on-year rise of 2.9 percent, he said.

The official added that the fourth quarter is the high season for tourism and the Thai government expects to welcome 14 million visitors in the remainder to push the number of international holidaymakers to the Southeast Asian country to 40.5 million for the whole year./.
