Mexico City (VNA) – Latin America’s leftist movement has never played such a significant role as it does today, becoming a powerful political counterweight to the conservative trend and imposition of major powers, said Quan Minh Cuong, Secretary of the Cao Bang Provincial Party Committee and Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the 29th International Conference “Political Parties and a New Society” in Mexico City.
The event, held from September 25–27, brought together representatives of hundreds of political parties, social movements, and progressive organisations from more than 40 countries across continents.
In his remarks, Cuong underlined that in a world undergoing profound upheavals, from armed conflicts and fierce strategic competition to deepening divisions of interests, communist parties and international leftist movements continue to affirm their irreplaceable role in global politics. They are witnessing positive new development steps, while also facing unprecedented challenges, he noted.
On behalf of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), he expressed his gratitude to communist, workers’ and progressive left-wing parties worldwide for their accompanying and support for Vietnam in the past struggle for national independence and reunification, as well as in the ongoing cause of national renewal, construction and defence.
Vietnam looks forward to the continued solidarity, support, and cooperation from progressive political parties for a world of peace, fairness, unity, and sustainable development, Cuong stressed.
Tania Valentina Díaz, Vice President for International Relations of Venezuela’s United Socialist Party (PSUV), underscored the need for leftist movements to uphold independence and national sovereignty as the foundation for freedom, justice, and sustainable development.
A Cuban delegate stressed that international solidarity remains the most powerful weapon against imperialism, reaffirming Cuba’s determination to defend revolutionary achievements and pursue ongoing economic and social reforms.
Many participants voiced deep concern about the current global situation, with rising armed conflicts and a rapid shift towards a multipolar, multicentred world order. The conference expressed strong solidarity with the Palestinian people, calling for an immediate end to military attacks and affirming the right of all nations to live in peace.
The speech of the Palestinian Ambassador to Mexico won broad support as he urged the international community to exert greater pressure to stop what he described as “war crimes” against the Palestinian people. Delegates agreed that safeguarding peace, protecting human rights, and upholding international justice must be at the core of today’s leftist movement.
During his stay in Mexico, the Vietnamese official also met with General Secretary of the Mexican Labour Party (PT) Alberto Anaya Gutiérrez, who commended Vietnam’s achievements over nearly four decades of Doi moi (renewal) and put forth measures to further strengthen ties between the two parties and governments.
For his part, Cuong appreciated the exchanges and discussions, which provide valuable experience for the country’s development. He reported that the CPV is preparing for its 14th National Party Congress, which considers human resources as the fundamental foundation and science, technology and innovation as key drivers for leading the country into a new era of development.
Regarding party-to-party relations, the Vietnamese representative praised PT’s longstanding cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in the dissemination of publications in the history of the country’s struggle and achievements in the renewal process, reflecting the close relationship between the two parties.
The Vietnamese delegation also met with Carolina Rangel Gracida, Secretary General of Mexico’s ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) and Sofía Carvajal, head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Committee for Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, the delegation had a working session with the Vietnamese Embassy and laid a wreath at the President Ho Chi Minh memorial statue in Mexico City’s People Freedom Park./.
