Vietnam-India strategic partnership in spotlight

A workshop on VN-India Strategic Partnership was held in Hanoi.
The Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam and the Indian Embassy in Hanoijointly held a workshop themed “Vietnam-India Strategic Partnership:Future Orientations” in Hanoi on July 17.

The event marked the 40 th anniversary of Vietnam-India diplomatic ties(1972-2012) and five years of the establishment of strategicpartnership between the two countries (2007-2012).

It was also an important activity in the Vietnam-India Friendship Year2012, agreed by the two countries’ leaders during President Truong TanSang’s official visit to India in October 2011.

Participants at the event said that Vietnam and India own atime-honoured traditional friendship, which was fostered by President HoChi Minh and Prime Minister J. Nehru.

Over thepast 40 years, in any circumstance, India has always been a reliableand faithful friend of Vietnam and supported the Vietnamese people’slegitimate struggle in the past, as well as their current nationalrenewal and development.

The Vietnam-Indiarelationship is being strengthened, especially since the two countriessigned a joint statement on the official establishment of theirstrategic partnership in 2007.

The two sides haveexchanged high-ranking delegations and effectively implemented bilateralcooperation agreements, as well as coordinated with each other atregional and international forums.

Cooperationmechanisms such as the Vietnam-India inter-governmental committee onscience-technology and culture-education, political consultations andstrategic dialogue between the two Foreign Ministries have provedeffective, helping further strengthen the mutual trust andunderstanding.

The Vietnam-India economic, tradeand investment relations have developed rapidly. Two-way trade betweenthe two nations reached 3.9 billion USD in 2011, quadrupling the figureof five years ago. In the first six months of this year, the bilateraltrade was 1.89 billion USD.

Vietnam-India trade has had a stable legal framework and India has recognised Vietnam as a market economy.

A number of investment cooperation projects have been set up betweenthe two sides, including a joint venture project on oil and gasexploration between India ’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited(ONGC) and the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam). Aproject between the Vietnam Steel Corporation and the Vietnam RubberGroup and India ’s Tata Steel Group to invest in building a steelplant in central Ha Tinh province is also highly valued.

Bilateral cooperation in science and technology has been developedsince 1978 with the signing of cooperation agreements between the twogovernments.

The Vietnam-India subcommittee onscientific and technological cooperation has to date convened eightsessions and carried out 13 joint research projects in informationtechnology, agriculture, animal husbandry, industry, remote sensing andenvironmental protection.

India has helpedVietnam train experts and researchers in the fields of atomic energyand IT human resource training.

At the workshop,many proposals were put forth to further strengthen the strategicpartnership between Vietnam and India, including increasing the exchangeof visits at all levels, stepping up research cooperation betweenVietnamese and Indian agencies and institutes as well as perfectingcommon legal frameworks between the two nations.

Participants stressed the need to set up a joint trade committee at anearly date and cooperate in building scientific-technological parks inVietnam .

In addition to bilateral issues, theyalso discussed regional and international issues, especially theemerging security architecture in Asia-Pacific.-VNA

Belarusian President hosts welcome ceremony for Vietnamese Party chief in Minsk

The state visit to Belarus by Party General Secretary To Lam, his spouse, and the high-level Vietnamese delegation marks a new impetus for strengthening and expanding bilateral ties. NA endorses 10% preferential tax rate for all press agencies

To affirm the Party and State’s commitment to supporting the press, the NA Standing Committee has adopted the government’s proposal to apply a uniform preferential corporate tax rate of 10% to all types of press. This move aligns with the current tax incentives for print newspapers.
