Buenos Aires (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador to Chile Nguyen Viet Cuong has paid a working visit to Antofagasta region in northern Chile to enhance cooperation between Vietnam and the region.

Antofagasta is one of the most developed areas in Chile, serving as a centre for industry, scientific research, and education. In addition to its strengths in mining, the region is famous for world-class astronomical facilities such as the Paranal Observatory and ALMA, and prestigious educational institutions like the University of Antofagasta and the Catholic University of the North.

During the March 19-22 trip, Ambassador Cuong met with Governor of Antofagasta Ricardo Heriberto Díaz Cortés. The two sides exchanged information about the economic, cultural, educational, and tourism sectors of Antofagasta and Vietnam.

Governor Ricardo Díaz introduced the region's strengths, particularly in the mining industry, featuring large mines such as Chuquicamata - the largest open-pit mine in the world - and Escondida - the copper mine with the highest production globally, along with valuable resources like lithium and molybdenum. Tourism and renewable energy are also potential fields in Antofagasta.

On this occasion, the Governor proposed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Antofagasta and a Vietnamese locality to promote bilateral cooperation.

Cuong said he will closely coordinate with the Antofagasta government to identify a suitable locality in Vietnam for signing the MoU.

When in Antofagasta, the Vietnamese delegation held meetings with the Antofagasta Industrial Association and representatives from local businesses. Both sides discussed opportunities for trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Antofagasta, particularly in mining, renewable energy, and import-export of goods. They agreed to continue maintaining connections, organising meetings, and working together to promote economic cooperation between the two sides./.
