Vietnam treasures ties with Sri Lanka

NAChairman Hung made the remarks at talks with visiting Speaker of SriLanka’s Parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa, in Hanoi on July 15 following awelcoming ceremony for the visitor.

The Vietnameselegislative chief expressed his hope that Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa’svisit will further tighten the relationship between the two countries.

He congratulated Sri Lanka on its significant achievements inmaintaining peace, stability, national concord and reconciliation aswell as its triumphs during its cause of national construction andreconstruction.

The NA leader said he believed that underthe sound guidance of its leaders, Sri Lanka will rapidly become aprosperous country which plays an increasingly important role in theregion and the world.

He thanked the people of Sri Lanka fortheir support to Vietnam during the past struggle for nationalindependence as well as the present process of national construction anddevelopment.

Chairman Hung noted with joy the activedevelopment of the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperationbetween the two countries and the fruitful links between the twolegislative bodies in particular.

Apart from fine relationsin politics, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have cultivated ties in economics,trade and investment cooperation, however, the outcomes have yet tomatch their potential, he said.

Vietnam desires to step upcooperation with Sri Lanka in areas that are of either side’s strengthsand demands such as agriculture, aquaculture, infrastructuredevelopment, culture, education and national defence and security, henoted.

The NA chief expressed his hope that Sri Lanka willshare its experience in applying international laws in several fieldslike addressing trade disputes and ensuring maritime security andsafety, saying Vietnam is willing to share its experience in nationalconstruction and reconstruction.

Thanking Sri Lanka forbacking Vietnam as a host of the 132nd Assembly of theInter-Parliamentary Union scheduled for 2015, the legislative chief saidhe hopes that Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa will lead a high-ranking SriLankan delegation to the event.

For his part, Speaker ChamalRajapaksa thanked Vietnam for its support to his country in nationalconstruction and reconstruction.

He expressed his delightwith the strong performance of the two countries’ friendshipparliamentarians’ groups, contributing to boosting legislative ties andpeople-to-people exchanges.

The speaker underlined the needfor the two countries to strengthen their cooperation in tourism,aviation and aquatic products apart from their existing close links innational defence and security, trade and investment.

At thetalks, host and guest agreed to further enhance the friendship andcooperation between the two legislative bodies.

They declaredto closely work with each other in supervising the implementation ofagreements reached by the two Governments, creating a favourable legalenvironment for the two countries’ businesses to boost their exchangesas well as trade and investment promotion activities.

Thetwo sides will also increase the exchange of delegations of committeesand friendship parliamentarian groups and the sharing of experiences inparliamentary and legislative activities while consulting each other atmultilateral forums.

Later on in the day, NA Chairman Hung hosted a banquet for Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa and his entourage.

Earlier, the Sri Lankan delegation visited Ho Chi Minh Museum and the Vietnam Buddhist Institute.

The same day, Prof. Tissa Vitharana, Senior Minister of Technologyand Research and General Secretary of the Socialist Party of Sri Lanka,worked with the Vietnamese Party Central Committee’s Commission forExternal Relations and the Ministry of Science and Technology.-VNA

To further strengthen Vietnam-Belgium relations, especially parliamentary cooperation, both sides agreed to enhance delegation exchanges at all levels, particularly between parliamentary committees and friendship groups. They also pledged to share legislative and supervisory experience, coordinate positions in international organisations, support each other’s candidacies for UN bodies, and effectively implement the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
