Sydney (VNA) – The Vietnamese Consulate General in Sydney welcomed the overseas Vietnamese (OV) community to its “Community Tet – Spring from the Homeland” event on February 1, an intimate cultural reunion that fostered emotional and communal links with their beloved homeland.
In his opening remarks, Consul General Nguyen Thanh Tung spoke with pride of Vietnam’s success in maintaining socio-political stability, social security and safety, and a solid foundation for development despite lingering global uncertainties last year. Its economy also sustained steady upward momentum throughout the year.
Tung described the Vietnam-Australia partnership as a standout success story, with ties growing ever richer and more meaningful across diverse sectors. A particular highlight of 2025 was the official visit to Vietnam by Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn, an occasion that deepened political trust and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
People-to-people exchanges continue to thrive, with more than 548,000 Australians travelling to Vietnam last year, up over 10% annually, further deepening interpersonal bonds between both countries.
The nearly 200,000-strong Vietnamese community across New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia has served as a vital bridge and ambassadorial force in advancing friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
Vietnamese professionals and students in Australia are making their mark in research, education, healthcare, digital transformation, renewable energy, and high technology. They have played instrumental roles in linking Vietnamese ministries, agencies, and local authorities with Australian partners, enabling technology transfers and the sharing of specialised expertise. Meanwhile, Vietnamese business owners have scaled their ventures, driving more trade volumes and investment flows, and new commercial opportunities on both sides.
Community members have remained deeply engaged in cultural diplomacy, projecting a positive image of Vietnam abroad and core national traditions to the next generation and international friends alike, all while upholding the national spirit of diligence, resilience, compassion, responsibility, and pride in their roots.
Last year, the Vietnamese community in Australia held impactful support campaigns for Vietnam, including fundraising and direct aid for those affected by natural disasters and severe flooding.
The event featured Hue royal court music performances, lion dances, and signature holiday cuisine, offering OVs a sense of warmth and closeness as if reunited with their families back home.
On this occasion, Tung presented certificates of merit to organisations and individuals whose tireless dedication and meaningful contributions have enriched and uplifted the entire community
The celebration reached a festive peak with a lucky draw offering round-trip air tickets to Vietnam as prizes, sponsored by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air, capping an evening filled with joy, gratitude, and shared pride./.
