Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a briefreview of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is alsoSecretary of the Central Military Commission, on December 20 attended thenational military-political conference in 2022 which reviewed the military anddefence work in the year and sketched out orientations for implementing tasksin 2023.

- President Nguyen Xuan Phuc will lead a high-rankingdelegation of Vietnam to pay a state visit to Indonesia from December 21-23 atthe invitation of Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

This is the first trip to the country by a keyVietnamese leader after the 13th National Congress of the Communist Party ofVietnam and also the first by a Vietnamese President over the past nine yearsas the two nations are preparing for the 10th founding anniversary of strategicpartnership. Read full story

- The state visit to Indonesia by President Nguyen Xuan Phucfrom December 21 to 23 is an important event marking a stride in the twocountries’ relations and helping develop their strategic partnership in anincreasingly substantive and effective manner, said Vietnamese Ambassador tothe country Ta Van Thong.

Talking to Vietnam News Agency, Thong saidbilateral relations have grown on the basis of friendship and mutual trust intoa strategic partnership that covers all fields of cooperation and is a future-orientedrelationship. Read full story

- The air raids with the mobilisation of B-52 strategic bombersby the US on Hanoi at the end of 1972 was a mistake, said Dr. Andrew Wells-Dangfrom the US Institute of Peace (USIP).

In a recent interview granted to the Vietnam NewsAgency, he said the airstrikes, known as the “Linebacker II", was thelargest bombing campaign of the US air force after World War II, but it failedcompletely. Read full story

- The 7th National Congress of the Vietnam War Veterans’Association (VWVA) will take place from December 29-31, heard a pressconference held in Hanoi on December 20.

Chairing the conference, Lieutenant General Khuat Viet Dung,Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the association, said that thecongress will draw the participation of 510 delegates representing more than 3million members nationwide. Read full story

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung proposed six major orientations for future collaboration, including further strengthening political trust through increased delegation exchanges, high-level contacts and bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and promoting more substantive defence and security cooperation through enhanced exchanges and stronger naval and maritime security capabilities.

NA leader urged more substantive, professional deputy affairs work

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man asked the NA Committee for Deputy Affairs to shift strongly from procedural consultation to strategic consultation, moving beyond the mindset of merely “following procedures correctly” towards policy design, process standardisation, quality control and forecasting.

Public resources must lead and activate private resources, while public investment should stimulate broader social investment. Prime Minister receives Deputy US Trade Representative

The Vietnamese Government will continue to work closely with the US side to soon finalise the agreement, thereby further deepening economic, trade, and investment cooperation as the main driving force for bilateral relations, said Prime Minister Le Minh Hung.

Vietnam sees Sweden one of leading European partners in innovation, green development

Discussing regional and international issues of mutual concern, both sides affirmed their support for multilateralism and free trade, as well as the peaceful settlement of disputes and conflicts in line with international law and the UN Charter. They also stressed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and overflight in accordance with international law, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
