- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong hosted a meetingwith leaders and former leaders of the Party, State and Vietnam FatherlandFront (VFF) in Hanoi on January 19, on the threshold of the Lunar New Year(Tet) – the biggest festival in a year of Vietnamese people.

He took the occasion to extend his best New Yearwishes to Party, State and VFF leaders and former leaders, and people andsoldiers living inside and outside the country. Read full story

- The Ministry of National Defence on January 19 organised aprogramme connected to Vietnamese peacekeeping forces still on duty in othercountries, on the approach of the Lunar New Year – Vietnam’s biggest nationalfestival.

The programme was held at the defence ministry’sheadquarters in Hanoi and connected to Military Hospital 175 in Ho Chi MinhCity, and Vietnamese peacekeepers joining the United Nations Interim SecurityForce for Abyei (UNISFA), the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), the UNMultidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central AfricanRepublic (MINUSCA), and those in New York. Read full story

- The Vietnamese Embassy in France on January 18 held aceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Paris Agreement on Ending the Warand Restoring Peace in Vietnam (Paris Peace Accords) (January 27, 1973-2023).

In his remarks at the event, Ambassador Dinh ToanThang highlighted the significance of Paris Peace Accords, emphasising that 50years have passed since the agreement was signed but the symbolic values ofpeace still need to be preserved and fostered. Read full story

- Russian Ambassador to Vietnam Gennady Bezdetko has hailedVietnam for its efforts in economic development amid a host of difficultiescaused by the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns over a global economic recession.

Vietnam recorded good economic growth in 2022although many countries across the world found it hard to go through the year,the diplomat said in an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) onthe occasion of the Tet (Lunar New Year). Read full story

- Vietnam is striving to become a developed nation with highincome, full and harmonious socialist-oriented market economy institutions, anda fair, democratic and civilised society by 2050, according to the National MasterPlan for the 2021-2030 period with a vision to 2050.

- The Hanoi Federation of Labour held a programme at Thang LongIndustrial Park on January 19 to take disadvantaged workers to their hometownsfor the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) festival.

It is the 15th consecutive year that the city’s trade unionshave held the activity for the group.Read full story

- The trade turnover between Vietnam andthe European Union (EU) reached 76.3 billion USD last year, a year-on-yearincrease of 5.1%, according to the European-American Market Departmentunder the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

- Contractors will still deploy over 2,000 machines, equipment,engineers and workers for the construction of Long Thanh international airportduring the upcoming Lunar New Year (Tet) festival, reported the project’smanagement board on January 18.

From January 20-26, five contractors will deployover 900 machines, vehicles and about 1,200 engineers and workers on the site.During the Tet holiday, workers will work during office hours and be off onnight shift, said Kieu Cao Hung, a ranking official from the VietnamConstruction and Import-Export JSC./.Read full story

Modern criminal justice system proposed under revised Criminal Procedure Code

The revised code proposes more progressive procedural rules to enhance adversarial proceedings, tighten power oversight and better protect human and citizens' rights. It will retain effective existing provisions, amend or repeal outdated regulations, and introduce new procedures to expedite case handling, reduce procedural costs and improve efficiency while ensuring fairness, objectivity and greater protection of the lawful rights and interests of organisations and individuals. It also aims to modernise criminal proceedings through the wider application of digital technologies and closer alignment with international practices.

Vietnamese community in Thailand urged to strengthen friendship bridge

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang commended the unity and sense of responsibility shown by the Vietnamese community in Udon Thani and across Thailand, urging them to continue preserving the Vietnamese language and cultural identity while helping build a positive image of Vietnamese people and contributing to bilateral relations.

Vietnam seeks Mauritania’s role as bridge to African Union for deeper ties

Vietnam expects Mauritania to act as a bridge for substantive cooperation between Vietnam and the African Union (AU), said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Gen. Vietnam treasures traditional friendship with Mauritania: FM

The two officials agreed to continue their long-standing coordination at multilateral forums, including the Francophonie, while reinforcing practical collaboration with regional organisations such as ASEAN and the AU, for the benefit of their people and for peace, stability and development in their respective regions and globally.

Vietnam, Laos strengthen cooperation on overseas community affairs

The two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in overseas Vietnamese and overseas Lao affairs for the 2026–2030 period, providing a framework for future collaboration. Laos will send a delegation to Vietnam to study preparations for the World Conference of Overseas Vietnamese, scheduled for December 2026.

Vietnam seeks stronger ties with Greece’s Patras

Mayor Kostas Peletidis said Patras is ready to work with the Vietnamese Embassy to promote the country as well as its culture and people through local cultural events and festivals, including the Patras Carnival, one of Greece’s largest annual festivals, the mayor remarked.
