Gia Lai (VNA) – Gia Lai is to complete all remaining houses for residents affected by Typhoon Kalmaegi and its historic floods in 2025 by January 15, Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung said at a working session on January 12 with the provincial People’s Committee.
The Deputy PM commended the province for its decisive execution of the Quang Trung Campaign, calling it a key political effort that shows the commitment of all levels of authority to supporting people in disaster-affected areas. While noting that most goals have been achieved, he encouraged Gia Lai to move with even greater urgency to ensure affected families can welcome the Lunar New Year in their new homes.
He urged the province to pull together as much manpower and resources as possible. For the eight houses in De Gi commune set to move to the An Quang resettlement area, he asked Truong Son Construction Corporation to boost staffing and work non-stop in a “three shifts, four crews” system to hit the January 15 deadline.
The Deputy PM shared that the government has allocated 1.16 trillion VND (over 44 million USD) to Gia Lai, emphasising that the money should be spent according to regulations, with priority given to directly supporting those affected by disasters.
He also urged the province to speed up assistance for agricultural losses, criticising delays in this area.
The official asked Gia Lai to review damage, particularly in high-risk disaster zones, and to propose long-term solutions for population resettlement, linking immediate recovery with reconstruction and sustainable development to minimise losses in future storm seasons.
Vice Chairman of the Gia Lai provincial People’s Committee Duong Mah Tiep said the province suffered severe impacts from Typhoon Kalmaegi and prolonged floods in November 2025, with more than 28,000 houses damaged or destroyed, including 674 houses that collapsed completely and required urgent reconstruction.
Following the Prime Minister’s directive, Gia Lai launched the Quang Trung Campaign, mobilising the entire political system. More than 1,200 military personnel and 650 police officers have been directly involved in housing construction and repairs, working continuously, including during holidays and Tet.
To date, all houses requiring repairs have been completed, while over 96% of newly built houses are finished. About 23 houses remain under completion, mainly larger, multi-storey homes.
Earlier, the Deputy PM visited affected households in Tuy Phuoc Dong commune, encouraging residents and congratulating them on moving into new homes ahead of Tet.
On the occasion, he also presented gifts to residents as well as to officials and forces involved in the recovery efforts./.
