Five crew members die, 15 injured in Indonesian fuel tanker fire

A tanker carrying fuel near Indonesia's Bali resort island caught fire on August 7, killing five crew members and injuring 15 others.

Jakarta (VNA) – A tanker carrying fuel near Indonesia's Bali resort island caught fire on August 7, killing five crew members and injuring 15 others.

According to Bali's Karangasem police, the tanker with 21 crew members aboard was sailing near Tepekong island in Candidasa waters and heading to Badas Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara province, when the accident happened.

One survivor said the first explosion appeared to have come from the accommodation area of the vessel. The helmsman was then found suffering from burns and lying on the deck.

Shortly after, there were reports of the second explosion followed by a fire in the engine room.

The police reported that five crew members died of their burns. Three others were taken to a hospital with serious burns. The remaining 12 have less severe injuries.

An investigation was launched to find out the cause of the fire./.
