HCM City (VNA) – HoChi Minh City’s Food Safety Management Board has inspected Thu Duc agriculturewholesale market for food safety.

The inspection, part of effortsto ensure food safety during Tet (theLunar New Year), was led by head of the board Pham Khanh Phong Lan, andofficials took random samples of fresh vegetables and fruits sold at the marketfor testing.

As the city’s largestagricultural market with a throughput of 4,000 tonnes per day, Thu Duc faces ahigh risk of getting low-quality products with untraceable origins.

Lan said: “Vegetables andfruits are highly impacted by the overuse of chemical fertilisers andpesticides. The board has to step up sampling and testing activities toevaluate the potential health risk associated with the contamination. Each trader is asked to keeprecords on product origins. If a violation is found basedon laboratory test results, the records will be used to remove products knownto be contaminated or adulterated from the market and appropriate action willbe taken.”

The high cost of laboratorytesting of 3 million VND (129 USD) per sample makes it difficult for the boardto carry out regular surveillance, she explained.

She said the market managementshould adopt testing models used at supermarkets which take samples andevaluate potential risks every night.

Nguyen Nhu, deputy director ofthe Thu Duc Agriculture Wholesale Market Joint Stock Company, said a foodsafety management team performed sampling and testing activitiesevery night for agriculture products with high potential health risks thoughnot for all products sold in the market.

The team regularly warnstraders at the market to comply with food safety regulations, he said.

However, their low awarenessreduces compliance with food safety practices such as maintaining notes onproduct origins and non-use of chemicals for whitening products or keeping themfresh.

The market has a total of 1,424booths, including 590 that trade vegetables and 712 that trade fruits./.
