Hanoi (VNA) – A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off Davao Oriental province on the southern island of Mindanao at 9:42 am on October 10, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earlier reported the quake at a magnitude of 7.4.
Phivolcs said the quake occurred at a depth of 10 km beneath the seabed, and its epicentre was about 62km southeast of Manay town in Davao Oriental province, posing a risk of dangerous tsunami waves between 1 and 3 metres high.
Immediately after the tremor, Phivolcs issued a tsunami warning for coastal communities. The agency advised residents in coastal areas of the central and southern Philippines to move to higher ground and stay away from beaches and shorelines until the warning is lifted.
Phivolcs warned that the earthquake could cause damage and that aftershocks are likely./.
