Hanoi (VNA) – Women in the Vietnam People's Army (VPA) have provided long-term care and assistance to nearly 1,000 orphaned children under the "Adoptive Mother" programme, reflecting the military's commitment to social welfare and community solidarity.
The information was released during a hybrid conference held by the VPA’s General Department of Politics on July 10 to review the programme's implementation during 2021–2026 and present awards for a military women's writing contest featuring warm family meals.
Launched in 2021, the programme has been implemented by military women’s associations in close coordination with Party committees, organisations and individuals. Integrated into emulation movements across the armed forces, the initiative has promoted compassion, social responsibility and the nation's tradition of mutual support through practical assistance for orphaned children facing difficult circumstances.
As of May, military women had sponsored 983 orphaned children, including 381 receiving long-term support until the age of 18. Assistance includes tuition fees and living expenses, 321 savings accounts, 406 scholarships, 377 bicycles and 3,715 gift packages. The programme also supported a child protection centre and funded the construction of two charitable houses, with total contributions exceeding 8.2 billion VND (312,000 USD).
At the conference, the Director of the General Department of Politics Affairs presented certificates of merit to 30 collectives and 28 individuals for their outstanding contributions to the programme. Winners of the writing contest, launched to mark the 25th Vietnam Family Day and encourage greater awareness of family values among military personnel, were also named.
Addressing the event, Senior Lieutenant General Le Quang Minh, Deputy Director of the General Department of Politics, praised the dedication of military women, particularly the "adoptive mothers" who have brought hope and encouragement to orphaned children in especially difficult circumstances.
Minh urged military women's organisations to proactively propose initiatives for building prosperous, progressive and happy families, enhance the effectiveness of the “Adoptive Mother” model, and further promote the humanitarian messages conveyed through the writing contest.
He stressed that, beyond providing material support, adoptive mothers should strengthen emotional bonds with the children through regular visits, exchanges and sustained engagement, helping transform sponsorship into genuine family relationships. Military women were also encouraged to uphold the noble traditions of the Vietnam People's Army, continuously improve their professional expertise and digital skills, and strive to become exemplary role models in both their units and communities./.
