Hanoi (VNA) – Traffic police handled more than 2.39 million traffic violations in the first half of 2026 as road safety improved nationwide, with traffic accidents declining across all three key indicators.
According to the Traffic Police Department, the country recorded 7,773 traffic accidents during the six-month period, killing 4,877 people and injuring 4,486. Compared with the same period last year, accidents fell by 17.4%, fatalities by 8.4% and injuries by 28%.
Road accidents accounted for 7,706 cases, while railways recorded 46 accidents and inland waterways 21.
The 2.39 million violations were recorded across road, rail and inland waterway transport, up 43.2% year-on-year. Authorities suspended nearly 64,730 driving licences and professional certificates, deducted licence points in more than 336,000 cases and impounded nearly 528,800 vehicles.
Speeding remained the most common offence, with about 592,000 violations recorded, followed by drink-driving (416,900 cases), illegal stopping and parking (208,000), lane violations (101,000), running red lights (23,900), vehicle overloading (17,700) and driving under the influence of drugs (955).
Traffic police also identified 7,853 accident blackspots and traffic management shortcomings, of which 4,586, or 58.4%, have been addressed.
Beyond traffic enforcement, officers uncovered 1,648 criminal, economic and environmental offences, leading to the arrest of 1,776 suspects. The cases included smuggling and trade fraud, drug trafficking, illegal mining and sand extraction, explosives trafficking, environmental violations and illegal immigration.
Authorities seized 33 bricks of heroin, more than 34,000 synthetic drug pills, 19.65kg of other narcotics, 1.6 tonnes of fireworks and explosives, 4,438 cubic metres of illegally extracted sand and other goods.
Police also broke up 45 cases involving illegal street racing and public disorder, arresting 471 people. Criminal proceedings have been launched in 15 cases, while investigations continue into four others.
The department said it continued to modernise traffic management through digital transformation and artificial intelligence. More than 20,000 violations were detected through camera systems, while 2,864 cases were handled based on reports submitted by the public via digital platforms.
Online public services also expanded during the period, with more than 4.11 million transactions processed through the National Public Service Portal, including over 2.2 million vehicle registrations, 484,200 driving licence renewals and 1.4 million administrative traffic violation procedures.
More than eight million users have installed the VNeTraffic mobile application, while authorities have completed data cleansing for 92.5% of registered motorcycles and 86.7% of cars, laying the groundwork for a unified national traffic database.
The Traffic Police Department said it would continue strengthening digital technologies, administrative reform and public awareness campaigns to improve road safety and enhance traffic management nationwide./.
