– President Vo Van Thuong hosted a reception in Hanoi on January 11 for Politburo member, Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee’s Secretariat and head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee Li Shulei.

President Vo Van Thuong spoke highly of the significance of the Chinese guest's visit, which marks the first high-level exchange activity between the two Parties and countries in 2024 and aims to concretise the important common perceptions reached by the two Party leaders, especially following the State visit to Vietnam by General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China Xi Jinping and his spouse late last year. Read full story

– Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, his spouse, and a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation will attend the 54th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland and pay official visits to Hungary and Romania from January 16-23, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on January 11.

The working trip and visits will be made at the invitations of WEF Founder and Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, and Prime Minister of Romania Ion-Marcel Ciolacu. Read full story

– Spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang on January 11 refuted the accuracy of the information about Vietnam’s human right commitments posted on the website of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Responding to a reporter question on the information posted on the website of the UN agency that Vietnam pledged to complete a number of human rights reforms by the deadline of 2099, Hang affirmed the information is completely inaccurate. Read full story

– As soon as receiving information that three out of 14 migrants found inside a refrigerated shipping container at Rosslare port of Ireland on January 8 are believed to be Vietnamese, the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK and the Honorary Consul Office of Vietnam in Dublin, Ireland contacted Irish authorities to inquire into the case. 

According to the embassy, following directions by the Foreign Ministry, it has been closely coordinating with Irish authorities to verify the identities of the stowaways and prepare to undertake citizen protection measures if needed. Read full story

- The Ministry of Public Security (MPS) Office for UN Peacekeeping Operations held an inauguration ceremony for the Vietnam Police Peacekeeping Unit No.1 in Hanoi on January 11.

The unit is tasked with ensuring safety and security for UN personnel and assets, joining efforts in civilian protection, and supporting other police services when required at UN peacekeeping missions. Read full story

– Vietnamese shooters have won one gold medal and a ticket for Olympic Paris 2024 when competing at the Asian Rifle/Pistol Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Ahead the tournament, Vietnam set a target to bring home one gold media and at least one more Olympic slot. Earlier, female shooter Trinh Thu Vinh qualified for the Paris Games after coming in fifth at the world championship last year. Read full story

– The Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang will intensify measures to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing ahead of the fifth working round with the inspection delegation from the European Commission (EC) in April.
