Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a list of selected news summaries reported last night by the Vietnam News Agency.

– Vietnam’s national target programme for the socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas for 2021–2025 must be implemented “no matter how difficult” and deliver tangible, effective results, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

Addressing a nationwide conference in Hanoi on August 13 to sum up the programme’s progress and set orientations for 2026-2030, PM Chinh said the programme must focus on steadily improving the material and spiritual well-being of ethnic minority and mountain communities, with each year’s progress surpassing the previous. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has reiterated Vietnam’s readiness to share its experience in reforming and restructuring State-owned enterprises (SOEs) with Laos, including legal frameworks, management processes, and approaches to capital mobilisation and investment management.

While receiving a delegation from the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP) Central Committee’s Commission for State-owned Enterprise (SOE) Reform, led by Saleumxay Kommasith, Politburo member, Deputy Prime Minister and head of the commission, in Hanoi on August 13, PM Chinh commended the strong cooperation between the two countries in various sectors, particularly in SOE reform, a strategically important area for sustainable economic growth in both nations, and a driver of their great friendship, special solidarity, and comprehensive cooperation. – The outcomes of the state visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) by Party General Secretary To Lam and his spouse from August 10-13 are reflected in five major aspects, ranging from political trust and multifaceted cooperation to social foundations and multilateral engagement, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son.

Speaking to the press following the trip, Son said the first aspect is the deepening of political trust and the consolidation of good personal relations between the two countries’ top leaders. – Vietnam is moving closer to its goal of becoming Asia’s next “tiger economy,” driven by strong reforms and a vision for ushering in “a new era of development” in the future, according to the US-based Associated Press (AP).

In its article published on August 13, AP wrote: “Vietnam aims to get rich by 2045 and become Asia’s next “tiger economy” - a term used to describe the earlier ascent of countries and territories like the Republic of Korea (RoK) and Taiwan (China). However, to achieve this goal, Vietnam must reconcile growth with reforms, while tackling challenges such as an aging population, climate change and institutional reform. Read full story

– The fifth session of the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies, themed “Culture, ethnicity, and religion in Vietnam in the context of new developments,” was held in Hanoi on August 13, serving as a platform for domestic and foreign scientists, managers and social activists to connect and exchange ideas.

– Hanoi again claimed the title of Vietnam’s fastest city for fixed broadband in July, averaging 331.41 megabits per second for downloads, according to i-Speed, a network measurement platform operated by the Vietnam Internet Network Information Centre under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST).

Nationwide, fixed broadband speeds reached an all-time high, averaging 258.28 Mbps for downloads and 195.34 Mbps for uploads, a 2.6-fold increase from July 2024. Other major cities, including Hai Phong, Can Tho, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, also reported consistent gains. Read full story

– The Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) has announced that the Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) will not take place in 2025, following a thorough assessment of market conditions and the needs of its industry members.

Along with limitations in the host venue, ongoing challenges in the domestic automobile manufacturing, assembly, and trading sectors are key reasons. Furthermore, many member companies are not yet prepared to participate, as they lack significant new models to showcase at a large-scale event like like VMS, the association explained.
