Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar’s State Administration Council (junta) on December 27 lifted the curfew imposed in Yangon following the 2021 coup.
The decision was made in preparation for the country’s upcoming general election.
As security forces battled to put down the demonstrators, the junta enforced a dusk-to-dawn curfew in the largest city of Yangon, home to around 7 million people.
In the years since then, the span of the curfew has shrunk incrementally, and the junta said the remaining 1am to 3am lockdown will be lifted as of December 27.
Regional stability in Yangon region is improving, said a statement shared by junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun.
The statement said the decision was made in order to improve economic, social and religious matters, for the convenience of people's transport and to improve business development.
Myanmar will hold the first phase of the general election on December 28, followed by the second on January 11 and the third on January 25, 2026./.
