Nationwide crackdown on smuggling creates new opportunities for genuine products

Dr. To Hoai Nam, Permanent Vice President and Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, noted that counterfeit and imitation goods, as well as intellectual property infringements, have grown increasingly complex and sophisticated. Thousands of cases have been uncovered, with many well-known Vietnamese brands blatantly copied in both traditional markets and on e-commerce platforms.

Hanoi (VNA) – A nationwide crackdown on counterfeit goods, smuggling and commercial fraud, launched under the direction of the Prime Minister, has so far won broad support from the public, the entire political system, and business circles alike.

The association has called for the Government to tighten regulations on labelling, origin traceability and to strictly punish violations, he said.

Speaking from the perspective of business owners, Nguyen Thi Binh, chairwoman of the board at the Nguyen Binh services joint stock company, expressed her strong support for these campaigns against fake goods and substandard food products, describing them as a positive signal for honest enterprises.

"We are heartened to see these violations brought to light," she said. "It sends a clear message that those who break the rules will be held accountable."

Binh particularly stressed the need to protect and promote businesses producing traditional goods, and proposed that specific policies should be adopted to bolster this sector, including financial support, workforce training, and ensuring a transparent market environment.

Sharing a similar view, Duong Bich Hao, owner of the Dac San Ba Mien franchised supermarket chain, commented that fighting counterfeit goods requires businesses to unite, support each other’s development and collectively uphold standards and integrity.

From an academic standpoint, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Le Xuan Ba, former Director of the Central Institute for Economic Management (CIEM), warned that without product quality, any effort to build a national brand would be "meaningless". To empower the national brand, he argued for a comprehensive strategy focusing on product quality, reasonable pricing, effective marketing, and above all, investment in people - the cornerstone of sustainable development.

The Government’s push to intensify efforts against counterfeiting, smuggling and commercial fraud is opening up new space for genuine, high-quality products. Here, collaboration among regulatory agencies, businesses and consumers in defending Vietnamese brands is crucial, requiring united resolve and steadfast implementation./.
