Gia Lai (VNA) – Nobel Laureate in Physics Professor Serge Haroche is among dozens of world-renowned scientists attending the international conference “100 Years of Quantum Physics,” which opened on October 7 in the central province of Gia Lai.
The event is jointly organised by the “Rencontres du Vietnam” (Meeting Vietnam) Association, the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science and Education (ICISE), and the International Organising Committee in celebration of the “International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ)”, proclaimed by the United Nations on June 7, 2024, marking 100 years of the development of quantum science.
The conference honours Professor Haroche, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering work in quantum opitcs. He is the 19th Nobel Laureate to visit the ICISE since the centre began operations in 2013.
Gathering more than 80 scientists, professors, and researchers from 14 countries, along with 60 outstanding high-school students specialising in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, the event provides a vibrant platform for academic exchange and collaboration.
Participants are presenting and discussing a broad range of topics, including quantum optics, quantum communication and computing, condensed matter and atomic physics, high-precision spectroscopy and measurement, cold atoms and material simulations, quantum mechanics theory and methodology, high-energy quantum physics, cosmology, and quantum technologies applied in energy production.
Young scientists and graduate students have the opportunity to showcase their research and receive direct feedback from leading international experts. Roundtable discussions are fostering open academic dialogue, spreading new ideas, and shaping future research directions, while promoting collaboration between Vietnamese and international laboratories.
Professor Nguyen Quang Liem, President of the Vietnam Physical Society, highlighted that quantum science emerged as a bold departure from classical physics in the early 20th century. Grounded in the revolutionary contributions of Nobel-winning physicists such as Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Louis de Broglie, Heisenberg, Born, Schrödinger, Dirac,, it has redefined humanity’s understanding of nature and laid the foundation for modern technologies from semiconductors to quantum computers.
He emphasised that the conference exemplifies the power of international cooperation and the immense potential of quantum science to serve humanity’s common good.
Ahead of the main sessions, special lectures were held for young researchers and graduate students to enhance their foundational knowledge and foster connections with senior scientists.
Addressing the event, Lam Hai Giang, Vice Chairman of the Gia Lai provincial People’s Committee, called for stronger collaboration with global experts in quantum physics and semiconductors. He affirmed the province’s commitment to supporting the ICISE and developing advanced research, training, and technology transfer centers to nurture high-quality human resources for sustainable development./.
