Hanoi (VNA) – The Philippines has suspended government operations, closed schools, and halted foreign exchange transactions at its central bank as a tropical storm named Trami is approaching the eastern coast of Luzon.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on October 23 reported that Trami, with winds of 85 km/h, was located about 180 km off the coast of Virac, a central town in Catanduanes province. The agency warned of strong winds, heavy rains, and high waves in coastal areas along the storm's path.

The storm has triggered heavy rains, prompting local authorities to evacuate residents from affected areas. Government offices and schools across Luzon, the country’s largest island, have been temporarily shut down. However, the Office of the President emphasized that disaster response agencies and essential services remain operational.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the storm continues to pose a threat to the region./.
