The role of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam within the Greater MekongSub-region in its new context is the topic of the first internationalannual workshop held in Da Nang on July 23.

The event wasorganised by the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, the Lao NationalSocial Sciences Institute and the Cambodian Science Institute.

Theworkshop is to realise the memorandum of understanding on scientificcooperation between the institutes of the three countries signed thisyear.

Addressing the opening session, Prof. Dr. Nguyen XuanThang, President of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, highlightedthe dynamic development of the Southeast Asian region, includingCambodia , Laos and Vietnam , and economic cooperation and linksthroughout the Greater Mekong Sub-region, saying that they have helpedmobilise financial sources and technical assistance for development.

Sub-regionalcooperation requires the building of links in many areas, includingsocial sciences, Thang said, adding that linking activities has become afocus within cooperation frameworks between the three countries.

TheVietnam academy highly appreciated the progresses and acknowledgedthe outcomes obtained within social scientific cooperation frameworks ofCambodia , Laos and Vietnam , he said.

During the one-dayevent, participants discussed the international and regional situationand the role of three countries in the Greater Sub-Mekong region andacceleration of scientific cooperation between Cambodia , Laos andVietnam .

Apart from bilateral cooperation among them, the threecountries have pushed up their cooperation within the ASEAN framework,and regional and international forms such as the Mekong River Commission(MRC), the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS), the programme ondevelopment of trans-national poor areas along the East-West EconomicCorridor (EWEC), the Ayeyawady-Chao Praya-Mekong Economic CooperationStrategy (ACMECS), the Cambodia-Laos-Myanmar-Vietnam DevelopmentQuadrangle (CLMV), the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Development Triangle.-VNA

Vietnam delivers 3 tonnes of aid supplies to Myanmar earthquake victims

The aid package includes antibiotics, digestive medications, cold and flu remedies, and basic healthcare equipment like blood pressure monitors, blood glucose metres, bandages, and disinfectants.
