Binh Dinh (VNA) – The Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund on November 28 held a ceremony to present scholarships to students of ethnic groups and children of naval soldiers and fishermen in the central province of Binh Dinh who were severely affected by storm Damrey.

As many as 140 scholarships were presented to the students, with each primary student receiving grants worth 800,000 VND (35 USD) while junior and senior high school students - one million VND (44 USD) each.

Addressing the ceremony, Chairwoman of the Fund Truong My Hoa encouraged the students to pursue study despite difficulties brought by the storm.

Established in 1999, the Vu A Dinh Scholarship Fund aims to support studies of ethnic groups students. In 2014, the fund established the “For beloved Hoang Sa-Truong Sa” Club with the aim to offer assistance to naval soldiers and children of fishermen, who have been protecting the country’s sea and islands sovereignty.

This year, the scholarship fund and the “For beloved Hoang Sa-Truong Sa” Club handed over a total of 8,000 scholarships to students from ethnic groups and those from islands.

Storm Damrey hit the south central region of Vietnam on November 4, being one of the worst storms to strike the region in years.

The storm and subsequent floods claimed 89 lives and left 18 missing and 174 others injured in central and Central Highlands localities as of November 7.-VNA
