Singapore (VNA) – The first solar farm at a military base in Singapore has been launched at Sembawang Air Base to meet the growing energy needs of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing said this was an important milestone for the SAF, noting that the project contributes to the nation’s overall efforts to enhance energy resilience, including sustainable energy production and demand management.
The new solar power farm is expected to generate 18 MWp by the end of 2026, equivalent to powering around 4,700 four-room Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats annually, potentially saving about 1.9 million SGD (about 1.5 million USD) in costs each year.
With the completion of this project, the Ministry of Defence has achieved its goal of producing 50 MWp of energy by 2025, thereby contributing to the sustainable development targets of Singapore’s Green Plan 2030. The ministry also plans to continue installing solar panels at other SAF barracks and bases, aiming to generate about 68 MWp of solar energy by the end of 2027.
Chan said the military had to overcome numerous safety, security, and technical challenges during the installation of the solar panels at the base. For instance, the panels were mounted on a robust structure, with screw piles drilled 20% deeper into the ground and fitted with an extra plate for greater stability./.
