Kuala Lumpur (VNA) – Malaysia has strengthened health surveillance and border controls to prevent the entry of the Nipah virus, amid concerns about virus infections from India.
Bernama, the Malaysian national news agency, has cited a statement from the Ministry of Health (MoH), reporting that the Southeast Asian nation is tightening health surveillance and screening at all international border entry points.
The ministry said that it would enhance continuous surveillance, including thorough monitoring in the field and strengthening the national laboratory’s capacity to ensure early detection.
Health officials emphasised that the preparedness of health facilities had also been enhanced through the implementation of prevention and control measures, including infection prevention and control practices.
The MoH is also strengthening inter-agency cooperation with relevant bodies to safeguard public health and prevent any re-emergence of Nipah virus disease. The ministry has collaborated with the Department of Veterinary Services and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia under the One Health approach to continuously monitor the situation.
To date, the Nipah virus has not been detected in domestic or wild animals. The MoH advised the public, especially tourists visiting high-risk areas, to maintain good personal hygiene and avoid contact with sick animals or consuming contaminated products in order to prevent infection.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is increasing inspections of high-risk animal products imported into the country. Port Klang AKPS commander Nik Ezanee Mohd Faisal said the agency will be monitoring the entry of animal products from India.
Malaysian airports are also encouraging travellers to take extra precautions to protect their health, in response to warnings from the MoH. In a statement, the airport operator advised passengers to wear masks, especially in crowded or enclosed spaces, plan their trips carefully, and seek medical advice promptly if they feel unwell./.
