Phnom Penh (VNA) – The National Police General Directorate of Cambodia on January 31 announced the launch of a large-scale operation targeting online scam networks in Bavet city of Svay Rieng province.
Accordingly, the operation was carried out under the direction of General Sar Thet, Commissioner-General of the National Police in coordination with the prosecutor attached to the Svay Rieng Provincial Court.
Meanwhile, Koh Santepheap reported that around 700 security personnel were deployed in raids on the Van Chheung (A7) casino complex. During the operation, Cambodian authorities arrested more than 2,000 suspects of multiple nationalities.
On the same day, Men Sam An, Vice President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), instructed law-enforcement agencies to step up the suppression of cybercrime in order to safeguard Cambodia’s reputation among tourists and international investors.
Speaking at a meeting reviewing Svay Rieng’s 2025 performance and setting out the 2026 agenda, Men Sam An stressed that cracking down on online scam operations is a strategic priority to help maintain Cambodia’s economic stability.
Earlier, Cambodia’s Ministry of Information reported that during a nationwide seven-month campaign against technology-based fraud, authorities arrested 5,106 suspects of 23 nationalities and deported 4,534 individuals. In addition, the courts have processed 37 major cases, handing down sentences to 172 ringleaders and accomplices./.
