Thailand: There remain 1.6 million unregistered migrant workers

Bangkok (VNA) – Thai authorities have completed the registration of 400,000migrant labourers from Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, and there remain 1.6 millionunregistered workers, of whom around 1 million had their citizenship verified.

Thailand’sMinistry of Labour recently requested relevant agencies to shorten theregistration of migrant workers at One Stop Service Centres (OSS) in a bid to accomplishthe verification of citizenship and registration of work permits on schedule.

Thosewho have finished procedures are allowed to work in Thailand until March 31,2020, according to the ministry.

Ministerof Labour Adul Sangsingkeo asked OSSs nationwide to fulfill the registration ofmigrant labourers before March 31, 2018.

Thereare currently 80 OSSs across the country, of which five centres in Bangkok areurgently conducting necessary procedures for migrant labourers.

TheMinistry of Labour also opened a website to help migrant labourers update theiremployment status after their citizenship is verified.-VNA
