Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnamese Ambassador to Brazil Bui Van Nghi, who is concurrently in charge of Peru, paid a working visit to Lima from April 24–26 to discuss measures to strengthen bilateral relations, with a particular focus on boosting economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Peru.
At a working session with Peruvian Deputy Foreign Minister Félix Denegri Boza, Nghi affirmed that Vietnam treasures its traditional friendship and increasingly strong partnership with Peru. He highly valued the outcomes of the third session of the Vietnam–Peru Intergovernmental Committee held at the end of March, saying it was an important opportunity for the two countries to review cooperation progress, engage in in-depth discussions, and agree on practical measures to advance the bilateral ties, especially in economy, trade and investment amid global uncertainties and growing challenges to international trade.
Boza reiterated that Peru attaches great importance to its multifaceted cooperation with Vietnam, a key partner in the Asia-Pacific region, and pledged to continue close coordination with the country to promote two-way trade, support businesses from both sides, and bolster broader cooperation in the coming time.
He praised Vietnam’s growing role and prestige in the region and the world, welcomed Vietnam’s initiatives to enhance ASEAN–Latin America connectivity, and proposed Vietnam soon establish a permanent diplomatic and trade representative agency in Lima to help realise the vast cooperation potential between the two countries.
Both sides acknowledged the positive progress in bilateral trade, which rose by 6.5% in 2024. Peru is currently Vietnam’s sixth-largest trading partner in Latin America. However, they agreed that the trade value, standing at 518 million USD, remains modest compared to the potential and real demand between the two complementary economies.
At a another meeting with Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism Desilú León Chempén, the two sides held discussions on cooperation in trade, investment, and tourism. They stressed the need to foster more practical cooperation mechanisms, diversify export-import goods, and encourage businesses from both countries to enhance exchanges and explore new investment opportunities.
They also explored the possibility of jointly organising trade promotion events, exhibitions, and business forums to better connect the business communities of both nations, as well as advancing initiatives to boost tourism cooperation, particularly themed tourism linking Latin America and ASEAN.
During his stay in Lima, the ambassador also attended and delivered opening remarks at the Vietnam–Peru Business Forum 2025.
In his speech, Nghi provided an overview of Vietnam’s socio-economic development, highlighting achievements in economic growth, international integration, investment environment improvement, and market-opening policies. He also outlined the huge cooperation potential between Vietnam and Peru, proposing priority areas such as trade, investment, agriculture, fisheries, and processing industries, while urging the Peruvian business community to intensify connections and make the most of opportunities for economic and trade cooperation with Vietnam./.
