Hanoi (VNA) – The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.
– Party General Secretary To Lam chaired a working session with the Party Central Committee's Commission for Organisation in Hanoi on March 5 morning to discuss solutions to improve the quality of grassroots officials, during which he highlighted that improving grassroots officials' quality must remain a regular and strategic task as it plays a decisive role in strengthening governance capacity, administrative effectiveness and the implementation of the country’s political missions.
The Party chief demanded shifting from a traditional approach focused on adding personnel and general training to a modern system of personnel governance based on clear competency standards for each position, outcome-based evaluation, stricter power control, and incentives for officials to be proactive, innovative and accountable in serving the public interest. – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on March 5 called for strongest possible efforts to accelerate transport infrastructure development, stressing its crucial role in helping Vietnam achieve double-digit economic growth in 2026.
Chairing the 24th meeting of the State Steering Committee for national key transport projects, PM Chinh, also head of the committee, urged ministries, sectors, localities, project management boards, investors and contractors to demonstrate the highest sense of responsibility in implementing infrastructure projects. – National Assembly (NA) Chairman Tran Thanh Man stressed that any mistakes, though minor, must not be allowed while supervising and inspecting preparations for the election of deputies to the 16th NA and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2026-2031 term in the southern province of Dong Nai on March 5.
He suggested that in areas with large religious communities, particularly Catholics, local authorities should promote the role of respected figures such as parish priests and clergy in communication and voter mobilisation. As Election Day (March 15) falls on a Sunday, the province should arrange appropriate schedules to facilitate parishioners’ ballot casting. Read full story
– Politburo member and permanent member of the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat Tran Cam Tu, one of the five candidates running for seats in the 16th National Assembly (2026–2031 tenure) in Constituency No. 1 of Da Nang city met voters on March 4–5.
The meetings were organised by the Standing Board of the Da Nang Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee. On March 5 morning, the event at the city People’s Committee headquarters was connected online to 10 satellite venues across seven wards, including Hai Chau, Thanh Khe, Hoa Cuong, An Khe, Hoa Khanh, Lien Chieu and Hai Van. – Vietnamese Minister of Public Security General Luong Tam Quang and Russian Minister of Emergency Situations Aleksandr Kurenkov agreed to step up cooperation in emergency response, firefighting and disaster rescue between the two sides during their talks in Hanoi on March 5.
Quang said that based on the strong political trust between Vietnam and Russia, the two ministries have maintained close and fruitful cooperation in recent years, including regular mutual visits to share experience in early warning and emergency prevention, as well as participation in exhibitions and scientific seminars on firefighting, rescue and disaster response. – Vietnam and Greece have agreed to promote the opening of agricultural markets and enhance cooperation in maritime transport and logistics, aiming to further tap the potential of bilateral trade ties.

– Vietnam’s agro-forestry-fishery exports maintained strong growth momentum in the first two months of 2026, rising 17.1% year-on-year to an estimated 11.3 billion USD, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment
In February alone, export turnover was estimated at 4.71 billion USD, down 28.4% from the previous month but up 1.9% compared to the same period last year. Read full story
– Escalating tension involving the US, Israel and Iran is posing heightened risks to global transportation, trade flows and supply chains, creating mounting challenges for Vietnamese exporters as agricultural shipments gain traction in the Middle East, requiring them to proactively adapt in order to reduce risks and maintain growth.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade’s Foreign Trade Agency forecasts upward pressure on global prices for consumer goods, fuel, and crude oil in the coming time. Such hikes could exert indirect but broad negative effects on Vietnam’s overall production and trade, with particular exposure in exports destined for the Middle East. Read full story./.
