Argentina helps identify Vietnamese martyrs

The daily said on October11 that the Argentinean experts arrived in Ho Chi Minh Cityfollowing a proposal by Argentinean Ambassador to Vietnam Alberto J.Kaminker to identify 11 Vietnamese martyrs who are said by 16 familiesas their relatives.

At present, the forensicanthropologists are exhuming the tombs of the martyrs to take samplesfor sending to Argentina for DNA assessment.
TheArgentinean Ambassador said that information provided by the VietnameseGovernment shows there remain hundreds of thousands of unidentifiedfallen soldiers in Vietnam . Therefore, he contacted with theArgentinean anthropologists to ask for their help.

According to Dr. Mercedes Salado Puerto, they will spend three daystaking samples from the 11 sets of remains before taking samples fromtheir relatives for comparisons. Both types of samples will be sent toArgentina .

In addition to DNA assessmentresults, the Argentine Association of Anthropology will send backVietnam all information they find, he added.

Inorder to improve the identification of missings in action, in July 2012,the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF) singed a memorandum ofunderstanding on cooperation with the Vietnam National Institute ofForensic Medicine.

It is estimated that around450,000 Vietnamese soldiers killed during the war are yet to beidentified. From now to 2013, Argentina will organise trainingcourses in both countries for Vietnamese experts in forensicanthoropology.

Established in 1984, EAAF is anon-governmental scientific organisation which boasts expertise inanthropology and forensic genetics. Over the past three decades, theteam has worked in more than 30 countries to identify the remains ofpeople killed by repressive regimes and political violence.

Since 2010, EAAF has boosted technical cooperation with Vietnam to identify the remains of fallen soldiers./.VNA

Vietnam delivers 3 tonnes of aid supplies to Myanmar earthquake victims

The aid package includes antibiotics, digestive medications, cold and flu remedies, and basic healthcare equipment like blood pressure monitors, blood glucose metres, bandages, and disinfectants.
