Developing a stronger peasantry: Party chief

The Party chief wasspeaking at the sixth congress of the Vietnam Farmers’ Association whichcommenced in Hanoi on July 1 with the participation of nearly 1,200delegates representing over 10 million members nationwide.

Former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu and Nong Duc Manh, PresidentTruong Tan Sang, Former President Tran Duc Luong, National AssemblyChairman Nguyen Sinh Hung, Former NA Chairman Nguyen Van An, PrimeMinister Nguyen Tan Dung and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front(VFF) Central Committee Huynh Dam also attended the event.

Praising farmers and the association’s significant achievements over theyears, Party General Secretary Trong asked the delegates to focus theirdiscussion on orientations to build the peasantry in the context ofindustrialisation, modernisation and international integration.

How to promote the association’s role in representing and protectingfarmers’ legal rights and interests in the market economy, and improvethe quality as well as the efficiency of farmers’ movements should alsobe tabled, he said.

Trong called for the better following ofPresident Ho Chi Minh’s moral example, as well as the development ofefficient production models to contribute to ensuring national foodsecurity and building new-style rural areas.

He proposed theassociation pay attention to working closely with ministries andbranches to assist farmers in terms of finance, legal issues,science-technology, developing brand names and connecting with themarket during the process of agricultural restructuring and ruraleconomic transfer.

Vocational training, job generation,income increase and sustainable poverty reduction should be theassociation’s priorities, the Party chief noted.

Theassociation was also asked to reinforce itself in order to bring intofull play its central role in farmers’ movements as well as the campaignof building new-style rural areas.

All levels of theassociation’s branches need to pay attention to building villages andfarming families of culture, while raising their voice against negativedeeds such as violence against women and children, he said.

The Party General Secretary described the building of a strongworkers-farmers-intellectuals alliance under the Party’s leadership as aspecial and important task in the course of strengthening the nationalgreat unity bloc.

He urged party committees and authoritiesat grassroots levels to create favourable conditions for theassociation’s members to get involved in devising, supervising andcontributing their ideas to policies and programmes on buildingnew-style rural areas, agricultural insurance and health insurance inorder to ensure pensions for farmers.

Trong asked theassociation to seriously implement the resolution adopted at the seventhconference of the Party Central Committee regarding the massmobilisation work.

Addressing the congress, VFF leader HuynhDam underlined the association’s significant contributions toconsolidating the national great unity bloc and improving the efficiencyof the patriotic emulation movement among farmers.

President of the Vietnam Farmers’ Association Nguyen Quoc Cuong saidwith the theme “Solidarity, renovation, integration and sustainabledevelopment”, the congress took place as the country summons resourcesfor building new-style rural areas.

Pointing todifficulties and challenges facing the country’s agricultural and ruralareas, he commanded the association’s branches to continue revamping itsmobilisation methods.

The congress also evaluated theassociation’s performance over the last tenure, affirming its role inthe country’s agricultural development, building new-style rural areasand developing the peasantry.

Vietnam delivers 3 tonnes of aid supplies to Myanmar earthquake victims

The aid package includes antibiotics, digestive medications, cold and flu remedies, and basic healthcare equipment like blood pressure monitors, blood glucose metres, bandages, and disinfectants. Can Tho plans to eliminate run-down houses before reunification anniversary
