Early peach flower blossoms threaten Tet livelihoods in Ninh Binh

Due to the early flowering, about 70% of the garden is considered a total loss, farmer Tran Tan Dac said, adding that although the remaining area has been pre-ordered by traders, prices are only about half of previous years.

Ninh Binh (VNA) – In Vi Khe ward, where is seen a peach flower-growing hub of Ninh Binh province, many peach trees are flowering well ahead of the Lunar New Year (Tet) – the Year of the Horse, casting concerns over sluggish sales and potential losses for growers.

With nearly 30 years in growing peach flowers, farmer Tran Tan Dac said he has never seen his flower garden bloom as early and profusely as it has this Tet season. He noted that around 80% of the flowers have already blossomed, with many trees in full bloom and the remaining buds close to opening. Prolonged warm weather, he added, could cause the entire garden to bloom before the “Ong Cong, Ong Tao” (Land Genie and Kitchen Gods) worshipping ritual, leaving growers at risk of having no trees to sell for Tet.

Due to the early flowering, about 70% of the garden is considered a total loss, Dac said, adding that although the remaining area has been pre-ordered by traders, prices are only about half of previous years.

Standing in his nearly 1,800 sq.m peach flower garden now bursting into premature bloom, 64-year-old farmer Tran Van Khu could not hide his sadness and helplessness. After a year of hard work pinned on the Tet crop, early flowering has wiped out about 90% of his orchard, while the remaining trees are being sold at heavily discounted prices.

Khu said that a spell of abnormal weather, such as prolonged storms that weakened the roots, followed by scorching sunshine interspersed with frost in November, caused leaf drop and triggered early flowering. Now, instead of pruning branches for Tet sales, he is cutting them off and discarding them to help the trees recover in preparation for the next season.

Do Dinh Diem, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Vi Khe ward Party Committee, said unfavourable weather conditions had caused early blooming across some 20 ha of peach orchards, significantly affecting local incomes. The ward authorities have directed farmers’ associations and cooperatives to closely monitor the situation and provide technical support to help growers stabilise production and minimise losses, enabling residents to welcome the Lunar New Year with greater peace of mind./.
