HCM City (VNA) - Ho Chi Minh City has completed the tasks assigned by the Prime Minister and the National Steering Committee on illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing prevention and control.
According to the municipal Department of Agriculture and Environment, 100% of fishing vessels in the city have been registered and fully updated on the National Fisheries Database System (Vnfishbase). Since the beginning of 2024, the department has deregistered 1,665 vessels due to sale to other localities, change of use, dismantling or being missing. The list of deregistered vessels has been made public and synchronised with the vessel monitoring system (VMS), thus effectively supporting identification, inspection and control at sea.
Regarding fishing licences, 4,299 vessels have been granted or renewed licences, accounting for 96.61% of the total fleet. For the 402 vessels not eligible for offshore fishing, functional forces have made lists and assigned grassroots authorities to directly monitor and manage them, ensuring that no violators participate in fishing activities.
The control of fishing vessels entering and leaving ports is strictly maintained, contributing significantly to catch control and supporting seafood traceability. In law enforcement, HCM City is assessed as one of the localities that have taken strong measures.
Based on these results, Pham Thi Na, Deputy Director of the department, said the agency has proposed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment direct the Directorate of Fisheries and Fisheries Surveillance to add necessary data fields to Vnfishbase, including information on food safety certification for fishing vessels. She also called for relevant units to urgently update the full list of registered vessels to ensure consistent data for effective management./.
