HCM City prepares for natural disaster prevention

The HCM City People’s Committee has asked city departments and all 24 districts to prepare for natural disasters this year by completing maps about flooding hotspots and raising public awareness about disaster risks.

- The HCM City People’s Committee has asked citydepartments and all 24 districts to prepare for natural disasters this year bycompleting maps about flooding hotspots and raising public awareness aboutdisaster risks.

The maps will show the flood-prone locations that are often inundated withwater caused by strong storms.

The district authorities were also urged to make preparations forcommunity-based management of natural-disaster risks and propose guidelines inrepairing flood-prevention construction.

To prepare for natural disasters, city authorities are using advanced scienceand technology, rechecking devices and rescue equipment, and making an effortto help connect fishermen’s boats to mainland communication systems.

The Department of Transport has been asked to remove decaying branches andtrees before the storm season.

The city’s Steering Centre of Urban Flood Control Programme is responsible formanaging, repairing and operating the water sewerage system, high-tide controlculverts and valves, and pumping stations.  

The people’s committees of districts 12, Binh Thanh, Thu Duc, Nha Be, Binh Chanh,Hoc Mon, Cu Chi and Can Gio, all located along the Saigon River, have beenasked to encourage investors to speed up the progress of their flood-preventionprojects in the second quarter.-VNA
